A Mountain Jaunt

I’ve become a mountain person. I love the mountains. Specifically, I LOVE trees. Lots and lots of trees. I think this is in my blood. My mother loves the trees and I remember as a kid always talking about trees, visiting places with trees, wishing there were trees, learning about tree blooms, what types of trees are evergreen, which trees turn in the fall, etc etc etc. Trees, trees, trees. We love trees.

Did I already say, trees? Ha!

I wanted to live in San Diego all growing up…I mean since I was 7 years old, all I talked about was San Diego. Now, I’ve been here almost 20 years. The one thing I miss most here - trees. Large, tall, massive, trees. Most trees planted in San Diego are not native - but we have a few good looking trees here and there: large Eucalyptus’, beautifully blooming Jacarandas, the native Torrey Pines, Magnolias, and an occasional oak or large pine scattered throughout the city. There are others, but I’m talking about wanting large densely clustered evergreens, those that don’t thrive in the dry coastal desert that is Southern California.

I did the 20’s laying out like a lizard in the San Diego sun thing. Now, I’m a couple of years from 40 and I no longer want leather for skin. I want cool fog and to be surrounded by evergreen trees, to climb a mountain in a forest that smells like wet earth, I want...a change of season. I still love the ocean, but in another way.

So, the only logical thing for me to when I have a little bit of time is to drive myself up into the local mountains to bathe myself in the whiffs of the pine, suck in the crisp air and revel in the quiet rustling of the wind. The San Diego forests aren’t dense, but they satiate my hunger just enough for now…the rest will be satisfied with Julian’s Mama’s Pie.

Please enjoy these photos from my recent trip to Julian, through Mount Laguna. If you’d like to know my route - shoot me a message! I’d be happy to give you the best of my favorites so you can have the same refreshing mountain jaunt. 🌲
